The Surrey Chapter of the PIPE-UP Network formed in 2015, and has had some great moments! We organize with a few other organizations, primarily the Kwantlen Public Interest Research Group and Village Surrey.
One of our biggest successes was convincing Kwantlen Polytechnic University to rescind a Memorandum of Understanding they had signed accepting money from Trans Mountain/Kinder Morgan, which they would only receive if the proposed expansion was built. We saw this as bribe money and implicit support of the project. Along with the Kwantlen First Nation, KPIRG, the Kwantlen Student Association, faculty, students and other community members we convinced them to rescind the MOU. The campaign included a public forum (Popsicles vs. Pipelines), petitioning, classroom presentations, media outreach, and then a presentation to the Board of Governors.
We have hosted various other events, canvassed, and presented to classes and the city. We recently hosted an evening of music and stories with Luke Wallace at Central City Library. It was a great evening! Volunteer profiles will be up shortly.
